Ladder Maintenance & Storage Guide
Well-maintained ladders last longer and guarantee operator safety on every climb. Keep rungs and steps thoroughly clean of grease and paint, protect structural stiles from weather exposure, lubricate moving locks with approved dry sprays, and store ladders horizontally on padded racks in sheltered, dry indoor areas.
ROUTINE CARE: STEPS, HINGES & HARDWARE
Daily and weekly preventative maintenance prevents accidental slips and premature mechanical wear across heavy-duty access fleets:
Traction Rung Cleaning
Wipe down steps after every shift. Clean off wet cement, grease, hydraulic fluids, and drying paint immediately using a stiff non-metallic bristle brush and warm soapy water to preserve serrated anti-skid traction.
Hinges & Locking Spreader Care
Blow out accumulated dust, grit, and masonry powder from hinge pivots and over-center spreader arms using dry compressed air. Stiff hinges should never be forced open with mallets or pry bars.
Approved Dry Lubrication
Apply a light PTFE or dry silicone spray lubricant strictly to pivot pins, pulley axles, and gravity rung latches. Never use automotive grease, heavy oil, or sticky penetrants that attract abrasive factory dust. Never lubricate rungs or climbing rails.
Extension Rope & Pulley Check
Inspect synthetic hoist ropes for tension slack, unraveling, or acid splatter. Keep extension ropes coiled neatly when not in use. Replace any rope showing surface fuzzing or thinning.
MATERIAL-SPECIFIC MAINTENANCE: ALUMINIUM, FRP & STEEL
Each structural material demands dedicated care protocols to maintain rated capacity and safety standards:
Aluminium Ladders
Aluminium forms a natural protective oxide film, but exposure to saline coastal air, acidic chemical vapors, or wet lime causes pitting corrosion. Rinse aluminium ladders with fresh water after industrial washdowns, dry thoroughly, and inspect stiles for dent damage caused by forklift impacts.
Fiberglass (FRP) Ladders
FRP composite is non-conductive, but its electrical insulation degrades if coated with conductive grime, metallic dust, or moisture. Clean FRP rails with mild soap, rinse with demineralized water, and dry completely. Shield from direct midday ultraviolet sunlight to prevent resin chalking and fiber blooming.
Mild Steel Access Systems
Mild steel platform ladders, warehouse trolleys, and tower scaffolds rely on durable paint or powder coatings. Touch up paint chips immediately with rust-inhibiting primer to prevent moisture infiltration and sub-surface oxidation on load-bearing structural tubes.
THE PRIMARY CAUSES OF PREMATURE LADDER DAMAGE
Understanding what damages access equipment helps operations managers train work crews and avoid costly fleet retirements:
Impact Drops & Transit Dragging
Dropping ladders off truck beds or dragging them across concrete floors bends rail flanges, flattens tubular rungs, and grinds rubber shoes down to bare metal.
Stacking Heavy Material on Top
Storing toolboxes, pipes, scaffolding boards, or heavy industrial machinery on stored ladders causes permanent bowing, twist deflection, and weakened joints.
Severe Overloading & Sudden Dynamic Bouncing
Carrying excessive material loads or jumping while standing on rungs stresses aluminium rivets and composite beams far beyond engineered design thresholds.
Prolonged Exposure to Harsh Weather
Leaving ladders exposed outdoors through summer heat and heavy monsoons corrodes steel hardware, degrades rubber feet, and accelerates FRP resin weathering.
SAFE STORAGE PROTOCOLS FOR INDUSTRIAL FLEETS
Proper storage ensures ladders remain straight, undamaged, and instantly ready for service:
Horizontal Multi-Point Cantilever Racks
Store long extension and straight ladders horizontally on wall-mounted cantilever brackets. Provide at least three evenly spaced support points along the length to prevent center-sag and long-term bowing.
Vertical Clamped Storage
If storing vertically, secure step ladders upright with safety chains or bungee retainers against a rigid wall to prevent accidental tip-over during warehouse traffic.
Covered, Dry & Shaded Facility
Store all equipment indoors in well-ventilated, dry areas away from damp walls, vehicle loading bays, corrosive chemical drums, and excessive boiler heat.
Fully Retracted & Locked
Always retract multi-section extension ladders fully and engage rung locks before racking. Neatly coil hoist ropes around the bottom rungs to eliminate tripping hazards.
WHEN MAINTENANCE ISN’T ENOUGH: STRUCTURAL RETIREMENT
Routine maintenance cannot fix structural failure. Knowing when to retire a ladder protects worker lives:
Unrepairable Structural Failures
If a ladder develops cracked stiles, sheared rivets, twisted side rails, or splintered FRP resin, withdraw it from service permanently. Field welding or straightening aluminium severely weakens the metal structure.
Factory-Approved Replacement Parts
Only non-structural consumables like molded rubber safety shoes, spreader hinge pins, or extension hoist ropes should be replaced, and exclusively with genuine manufacturer-certified parts.
